Gryphon Trio to present mix of Shostakovich, Beethoven

The Department of Music is joining with the Buffalo Chamber Music Society to present two concerts with the acclaimed Gryphon Trio as part of UB’s Slee Visiting Artist Series.

The concerts, “Trios of Shostakovich and Beethoven with the Gryphon Trio,” will take place at 8 p.m. March 13 in the Mary Seaton Room of Kleinhans Music Hall, and at 7:30 p.m. March 14, in Lippes Concert Hall in Slee Hall on the UB North Campus.

The program on March 13 will feature Beethoven: Trio in C minor, Op.1, No. 3; Shostakovich: Trio No.1 in C minor, Op. 8; and Beethoven: Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 70, No. 2. On March 14, the trio will present Beethoven: Trio in E-flat Major, Op. 1, No. 1; Shostakovich: Trio No. 2 in E Minor, Op. 67; and Beethoven: Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 97 (“Archduke”).

A pre-concert reception sponsored by the UB Alumni Association will take place before the March 14 concert at UB. Advance tickets are required; information on how to purchase the reception/concert package can be obtained by calling the Slee Hall concert office at (716) 645-2921.

Members of the Gryphon Trio also will hold two free master classes at 7 p.m. March 12. The class on piano will take place in Lippes Concert Hall; the class on strings will be held in Baird Recital Hall, 250 Baird Hall, North Campus.

Tickets for the March 13 concert at Kleinhans are $25 for the general public and free for students, and can be purchased by calling the Buffalo Chamber Music Society at (716) 462-4939.
