Eleven new companies join START-UP NY via UB

Eleven companies have been approved for START-UP NY through their affiliation with UB.

The companies, which will open or expand on or near UB’s campuses, expect to create 87 jobs and invest $1,019,400 in the Buffalo Niagara Region within five years.

Each company has ties to the university’s academic and research strengths, will collaborate with UB faculty researchers and offer internships, scholarships or jobs to students.

The 11 new companies:

Atomic Medical Innovations

Capital investment: $3,500
Location: UB Gateway Building, 77 Goodell St., Buffalo
Expected jobs: 3

Atomic Medical Innovations is an Arizona company that designs and develops surgical products for the medical device and wound care industry, especially as it relates to gastrointestinal conditions. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with researchers from the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and apply to the Center for Advanced Biomedical and Bioengineering Technology (UB CAT), which links academic research to commercial interests.

Burgio Health Alliance

Capital investment: $45,000
Location: UB Gateway Building
Expected jobs: 6

Burgio Health Alliance is an East Amherst-based company developing software applications designed to help self-insured human resources departments improve employee wellness and help contain health care costs. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with UB researchers and apply to UB CAT.

Disease Diagnostic Group

Capital investment: $214,000
Location: 43North business incubator, 640 Ellicott St., Buffalo

A Massachusetts research-and-development company and 2015 43North business idea competition winner, Disease Diagnostic Group is developing medical diagnostics for infectious diseases in developing countries using magneto-optical technology. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with UB researchers and enroll in the UB School of Management’s Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership (CEL).

Empirican Clinical Testing Services

Capital investment: $135,000
Location: UB Gateway Building
Expected jobs: 15

Empirican Clinical Testing Services is a Buffalo-based company developing software to support research trials that feature large investigator networks. The product is designed to provide scalable identification, enrollment and engagement solutions. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with UB researchers and apply to UB CAT.

Letchworth (doing business as Fiducia Solutions)

Capital investment: $42,500
Location: Thomas R. Beecher, Jr. Innovation Center, 640 Ellicott St., Buffalo
Expected jobs: 5

This Virginia company develops software applications that improve financial security systems for nonprofits and other organizations. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates and collaborate with School of Management researchers.

Indago

Capital investment: $30,000
Location: UB Gateway Building
Expected jobs: 9

Indago is a Buffalo-based startup company that is building, among other things, a social media platform for team-based fundraising events for nonprofits. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates and mentor students through the CEL.

Painless1099

Capital investment: $55,000
Location: 43North business incubator
Expected jobs: 18

This Virginia company and 2015 43North winner is developing software to help independent contractors, such as freelance designers and real estate agents, save money to pay their taxes. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates and collaborate with School of Management researchers.

Plum

Capital investment: $16,900
Location: 43North business incubator
Expected jobs: 3

Plum is a Canadian company and 2015 43North winner that has developed a psychometric behavioral screening product to help businesses and job recruiters identify potential new employees. Plum plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with researchers from UB’s School of Social Work and enroll in the CEL.

Qoints USA

Capital investment: $17,500
Location: 43North business incubator
Expected jobs: 5

This information technology company from Canada aggregates digital marketing data to be used by brand managers. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates, collaborate with School of Management researchers and apply to the CEL.

Sedara

Capital investment: $110,000
Location: UB Gateway Building
Expected jobs: 5

An existing cybersecurity business that is expanding in Buffalo, Sedara develops, implements and manages information security solutions for businesses. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates and collaborate UB researchers.

Voiceitt

Capital investment: $350,000
Location: 43North business incubator
Expected jobs: 10

Voiceitt is an Israeli company and 2015 43North winner that has developed software to help people with speech disabilities communicate more clearly. The company plans to offer UB students internships, hire graduates and collaborate UB researchers. It also plans to apply to UB CAT and enroll in the CEL.

START-UP NY SUNY Tax-free Areas to Revitalize and Transform Upstate New York — aims to spur economic development by enabling universities to identify areas where new and expanding businesses can operate for 10 years without paying New York State business, corporate, income, sales or property taxes, or franchise fees.

Since Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced the program, 67 companies, including the 11 announced here, have pledged to move or expand in the Buffalo Niagara region and work with UB to further their respective businesses. The 67 companies plan to create 1,859 jobs and invest $49,906,222 in the region.

Note: Since UB’s last START-UP NY announcement in December, three companies have left the program. They are Illuminating Diagnostics, Nuenz Inc. and Sinapis Pharma. Combined, the companies planned to invest $5,655,000 and create 79 jobs. Those numbers have been subtracted from the figures above.
