Nearly one quarter of fourth-year students at UB’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences have chosen a UB residency program this year, according to statistics compiled on the graduates at Match Day 2015 held on March 20.

Match Day is the day when medical school students around the country find out where they will do their postgraduate training — the residency — which lasts from three to seven years, depending on the specialty chosen.

Thirty-three of the 140 students in the Class of 2015 have chosen to do their residencies at UB, according to Roseanne C. Berger, senior associate dean for graduate medical education.

“This is very good news as it demonstrates increased confidence in UB’s residency programs,” says Berger. “More and more of our students are deciding that the best place for them to complete their medical training is in a UB residency program at one of our fine affiliated hospitals. At the same time, UB residency programs recognize the value of retaining and attracting UB medical students to their programs.”

Adds David A. Milling, senior associate dean for student and academic affairs in the medical school: “The new medical school that UB is building downtown and all of the excitement related to the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus also are becoming important factors in attracting both medical students and residents to UB and Buffalo.”

Seventy percent of this year’s class will stay in New York to do their residency training, 20 percent more than just two years ago. Eighty-two percent of the students in the class of 2015 are New York State residents.
