BUFFALO, N.Y. – David Gerber, PhD, University at Buffalo Distinguished Professor of history, has been honored by the Organization of American Historians (OAH) and the American History Research Association of China (AHRAC) with a 2013 China Residency.

Gerber will lead a week-long seminar that marks the first OAH venture into the People’s Republic of China. This event will be held at the Northeast Normal University at Changchun, Jilin. It will focus on American social history. Gerber’s credentials in this area are exceptional, and his book, “American Immigration: A Very Short Introduction,” reflects the seminar’s concentration on American ethnicity and immigration law and policy.

“In addition to gaining insights into the most dynamic society in the world, I am most interested in learning how the work of the American historians has been conceived of by Chinese historians,” says Gerber. The seminars are scheduled for June 2013.

Gerber has received several other awards for his contribution to the study of American History, including the Rita Lloyd Moroney Award for Scholarship in Postal History by the US Postal Service in 2008, the SUNY Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award in 1991 and the Herbert Gutman Prize for the best book in American social history in 1990.

In addition to the opportunity to share his expertise with students and scholars from across China, Gerber will receive round-trip airfare as well as per diem funding to cover living expenses.
