Media Advisory: Upstate New York Pharmacology Society Holds Its Inaugural Meeting

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Upstate New York Pharmacology Society, a new regional organization founded in 2010 by University at Buffalo faculty members, is holding its inaugural meeting on May 14 at UB's Center for the Arts on the North Campus from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.

UNYPS is a regional affiliate of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, whose members develop new medicines and therapeutic agents to fight existing and emerging diseases. It was founded in 2010 by Margarita Dubocovich, PhD, professor and chair of the UB Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology and Peter G. Bradford, PhD, associate professor in the department, to serve pharmacologists and toxicologists at institutions and companies in and around the cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany as well as Ohio, Pennsylvania and Canada.

The theme of the meeting is "Signaling Pathways as Targets for Drug Discovery" and it will feature talks by faculty from the U.S. and Canada, as well as symposia focusing on presentations by graduate students and junior scientists. Presentations will cover therapeutics for a broad range of conditions from brain disorders to cancer and heart disease as well as new techniques in the drug discovery process.

According to UNYPS, the Upstate New York region supports four medical schools, three schools of pharmacy, two schools of dentistry, one school of veterinary medicine and numerous pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical companies.
