Amherst Woman Dies After Losing Consciousness in Pool

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Amherst resident Hua Ge (pronounced "Huh-waa Guh"), 27, died this morning at Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital after she lost consciousness last night during a recreational swim in the pool at Alumni Arena.

Around 7:45 p.m., UB lifeguards found her unresponsive. They performed CPR and summoned UB Police, who also provided first aid. The Getzville Fire Department also responded. The swimmer was taken to the hospital by Twin City ambulance to Millard Fillmore Suburban Hospital.

Ge died this morning around 6 a.m. Her husband, uncle and UB staff were with her.

She was a a native of China and a 2009 UB graduate, who earned a master's degree in economics.

University Police are conducting an investigation of the accident. University staff is providing support for her family.

The UB family extends its deepest sympathy to Ge's husband, relatives and friends.
