BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo Center for the Arts will present Augusten Burroughs -- A One Night Stand! on Oct. 22 at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage theatre in the Center for the Arts on the UB North Campus. There will be a book signing following the event.

The acclaimed author had a very unusual childhood -- a childhood that America has come to know in his bestselling memoir "Running with Scissors," which spent more than four years on The New York Times bestseller list, spawned an Oscar-nominated film starring Annette Bening, Alec Baldwin and Gwyneth Paltrow, and earned him literary stardom.

Since publishing his first novel, "Sellevision" -- the fictional story of the warped lives of four home shopping network employees -- Burroughs has published five other works, among them three memoirs, and two collections of essays. His most recent releases are "A Wolf at the Table: A Memoir of My Father" and a collection of holiday stories entitled "You Better Not Cry." The film adaption of Sellevision, is also currently in production.

After surviving his tumultuous childhood and dropping out of high school, Burroughs obtained his GED and became successful in advertising. He was admitted to rehab for alcoholism, and used his writing as motivation to remain sober. His time in rehabilitation inspired his second memoir, "Dry," which describes the gritty and not-at-all-glamorous details of his treatment.

Burroughs has achieved fame as one of the most celebrated modern writers. His books are published in more than 25 countries, and his writing has appeared in magazines, literary journals and newspapers around the world such as The New York Times, Out, House and Garden and The Times. He has been profiled in People, The Guardian and Entertainment Weekly, which ranked him No. 15 in 2005's list of the "25 Funniest People in America."
