One of the greatest vocalists of all time, Colm Wilkinson has mesmerized theatre audiences for more than 30 years. A celebrated international and Broadway star, he originated the role of Jean Valjean and starred in "Les Miserables," both in Europe and North America. Wilkinson was also the creator of The Phantom in "The Phantom of the Opera" in the original workshop at Sydmonton, England. He went on to play this role in Toronto, starring in more than 1,700 performances.
Colm Wilkinson will perform the songs from his Broadway musicals that have endeared him to the hearts of millions, as well as original pieces and contemporary international hits.
Surrounded by music since his childhood in Ireland, Wilkinson began playing with various bands in and around Dublin in the early 1960s. Wilkinson established a reputation as a talented and versatile popular songwriter and performer. The early 1970s brought the first of many theatrical roles, as Judas in "Jesus Christ Superstar." Following the success of his self-titled L.P., he developed the character of Jean Valjean for the ambitious production of "Les Miserables," which became the central unifying force of the entire production. For these efforts and acclaimed performances on both the London stage and on Broadway, Wilkinson was awarded a Lawrence Olivier Award, Theatre World Awards and a Tony Award nomination.
Wilkinson earned the Dora Mavor Moore award for his portrayal of the Phantom in 1989-90. He returned once again to "Les Miserables" in 1998 in Toronto and received a second Dora Mavor Moore award for his role as Valjean. He followed this with appearances in "Les Miserables" in England, Ireland and Shanghai. "Les Miserables" was the first Western musical to be performed in the East.
