12 Faculty Members, Librarian and 2 professional staff members receive 2004 SUNY Chancellor Awards for Excellence

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Fifteen employees of the University at Buffalo have received 2004 SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence from State University of New York Chancellor Robert L. King.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities, recognizing the work of those engaged actively in scholarly and creative pursuit beyond their teaching responsibilities, was presented to Anthony S. Conrad of Buffalo, professor and director of graduate studies in the Department of Media Study in the College of Arts and Sciences; Michael C. Constantinou of Amherst, professor and chair of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and co-director of the Structural Engineering and Earthquake Simulation Laboratory (SEESL) in the department; David A. Kofke of East Amherst, professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Gene D. Morse of Williamsville, professor and chair of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and associate dean for clinical education and research in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Alan L. Selman of Williamsville, professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching, honoring individuals who consistently have demonstrated superb teaching at the undergraduate, graduate or professional level, was presented to Kathleen M.K. Boje of Depew, associate professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics in the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences; Jean D. Brown of Leroy, associate professor in the School of Nursing; Michael R. Detty of Rochester, associate professor in the Department of Chemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences; Sarah M. Elder of Buffalo, professor in the Department of Media Study in the College of Arts and Sciences, and D. Joseph Mook of Amherst, assistant dean for international education and professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering in School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Faculty Service -- a new award created this year --recognizes consistently superior service sustained over a multiple-year period to the local campus, the State University or the community, or the awardee's service contributions to discipline-related professional organizations or to faculty governance. Recipients are Joseph A. Gardella, Jr. of Buffalo, professor in the Department of Chemistry and associate dean for external affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences, and D. Bruce Johnstone of Buffalo, University Professor of Higher and Comparative Education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy in the Graduate School of Education (GSE) and director of the school's Center for Comparative and Global Studies in Education.

The Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service, honoring performance excellence "both within and beyond the position," was presented to Dean C. Millar of Williamsville, assistant dean for corporate relations in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and educational coordinator of Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence, a joint effort of the SUNY engineering schools to provide advanced engineering and technology assistance to New York State industries, and Bruce R. Majkowski of Lancaster, associate dean for computing and information systems and an adjunct professor in the School of Architecture and Planning.

Karen L. Spencer of East Aurora, archives and special collections librarian in the Charles B. Sears Law Library, received the Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Librarianship, recognizing "skill in librarianship; service to the campus, the university and to the field; scholarship and professional growth, and major professional achievements."
