Release Date: October 11, 2001

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- More than 50 second- and third-year law students from University at Buffalo are expected to participate in the 2001 Charles S. Desmond Moot Court Competition to be held Oct. 22-26.

Preliminary rounds will be held Oct. 22-24 in the law school, located in O'Brian Hall on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. Quarter- and semi-final rounds will be held Oct. 25 in the Erie County Courthouse. The final round will take place Oct. 26 in the Law School's new courtroom in O'Brian Hall, and will be heard by jurists who include Hon. Julio M. Fuentes (U.S. Court of Appeals, Third Circuit), Hon. Judith Lieb (Criminal Court of the City of New York), and Hon. Barbara Howe (Supreme Court, Eighth Judicial District).

A banquet for competitors and board members, sponsored by the UB Law Alumni Association, will follow the final round of competition, and will be held in the Jacobs Executive Development Center, 672 Delaware Ave., Buffalo, where participants will receive awards and the winning team will be announced.

This year's competition problem will involve the Child Online Protection Act (COPA) and whether it violates First Amendment freedoms. Competitors will argue the case of Ashcroft v. ACLU, a case scheduled for oral argument in the U.S. Supreme Court on Nov. 28.

Continuing Legal Education (CLE) credit will be earned by judges who are admitted to practice for more than two years. Each judge can earn 1.5 CLE credits per round.
