BUFFALO, N.Y. -- University at Buffalo dental educator Norman G. Schaaf, D.D.S., whose pioneering research at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) led to improved prosthetic devices for head-and-neck cancer patients disfigured by surgery and other treatments, will receive the first professional achievement award from UB's Center for Implant Dentistry.
The award will be presented at a dinner at 6 p.m. April 5 in the Buffalo/Niagara Marriott, 1340 Millersport Highway, Amherst, in conjunction with the Third Annual Michael A. Meenaghan International Symposium on Implant Dentistry. The symposium will be held at the hotel from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on April 6.
Meenaghan, a pioneer in the field of dental implants, was professor emeritus in the Department of Oral Diagnostic Sciences in the UB School of Dental Medicine when he died in 1998.
The award, which exemplifies Meenaghan's legacy, will be given to Schaaf for his global contribution to the dental profession through education, research and public service.
Schaaf recently retired as chair of RPCI's Department of Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics and professor of prosthodontics in the UB dental school.
He lives in Elma.
The course presented at the symposium will be directed by Robert J. Buhite, D.D.S., UB clinical associate professor of restorative dentistry and director of the implant dentistry program and the UB Education Center for Implant Dentistry. Four other specialists in the field of dental implants also will be presenters.
