BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The American Chemical Society (ACS) has recognized the work of the Western New York Younger Chemists Committee (WNY YCC) at UB with a Local Section Younger Chemist Committee Award.

The WNY YCC received the award -- one of four given this year -- during a reception celebrating the 25th anniversary of the YCCs during the chemical society's annual meeting held recently in New Orleans.

The group was honored for a number of activities, including hosting an annual graduate-student symposium, volunteering at local elementary schools and the Buffalo Museum of Science to perform "hands-on" experiments during National Chemistry Week, holding career-counseling seminars and working with teachers and scientists to improve science-teaching methods.

The group is composed of graduate students in the Department of Chemistry in the UB College of Arts and Sciences.

Maureen Kane of North Buffalo, a graduate student who authored the report chronicling WNY YCC's activities that won the award, accepted the certificate in New Orleans last month at the ACS meeting, which included a celebration of YCC's 25th anniversary.

The other graduate students who served as co-authors are Glamarie Burgos, Adam Hawkridge and Chris Kim, all of Amherst; Sheila Daniel of North Tonawanda; Meagan Doody of Albany, and Stephen Panaro of Williamsville.
