BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Michael J. Pietkiewicz, former senior legislative assistant/staff director for U.S. Rep. Jack Quinn (R-Hamburg), has been named director of federal relations for UB. Pietkiewicz will have primary responsibility for the university's federal-relations program and initiatives.

Pietkiewicz has spent the past five years in Washington concentrating on Quinn's transportation and labor agendas, and helped obtain significant appropriations for a variety of Western New York initiatives, including funding for the Multidisciplinary Center for Earthquake Engineering Research headquartered at UB and the Calspan/UB Research Center (CUBRC).

The appointment was announced by UB Senior Vice President Robert J. Wagner, who noted that "as a key staff member for many years for Congressman Quinn, Pietkiewicz will bring to his position at UB a unique blend of skills and contacts, including a knowledge and familiarity with issues facing Western New York and a broad array of contacts in the federal agencies and the Congress.

"Pietkiewicz's experience in legislative development and government relations will be a tremendous asset to our university," Wagner said. "I am confident that he will play a significant role in achieving our objectives for UB's federal-relations program."

Pietkiewicz holds a bachelor's degree in political science and history from Canisius College.

He lives in Buffalo.
