BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Strides being made in research and technology in the field of dental implants will be the topic of the first annual Michael A. Meenaghan Symposium on Implant Dentistry to be presented by the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine.

The symposium, to be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 23 in the Buffalo/Niagara Marriott, will honor the late UB professor emeritus and leading pioneer in dental-implant research who died last August.

Participants in the symposium and their topics are:

-- Robert J. Genco, SUNY Distinguished Professor and chair of the UB dental school's Department of Oral Biology; tissue engineering to regenerate bone around natural teeth and implants

-- Norman Schaaf, chair of the Department of Dentistry and Maxillofacial Prosthetics, Roswell Park Cancer Institute; implants to hold artificial eyes, ears and noses onto damaged faces

-- Craig M. Misch, assistant clinical professor, University of Pittsburgh; bone-graft research and applications for dental implants

-- Nelson Scarborough, senior director in allograft research at Osteoech, Inc.; bone repair and performance characteristics of bone grafts from human donors

-- Ronald Roncome, a San Diego dental practitioner; implants for orthodontic anchorage and high-tech patient treatment
