BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Western New Yorkers who have made an early New Year's resolution to return to college as a non-traditional student or speed up their progress toward a degree can turn to Millard Fillmore College (MFC) at the University at Buffalo, with its smorgasbord of more than 300 courses and variety of options available for the Spring 1999 semester.

Included in the course selections are three new cable telecourses, plus offerings on the Internet, seven certificate programs and an individualized-degree option.

Registration is now under way, with classes set to begin on Jan. 19.

The individualized-major program lets students create their own undergraduate-degree program while earning credit for life and/or work experience.

Telecourses offered via cable television bring instruction into the students' living rooms. Courses that can be videotaped and studied at students' convenience include "History of Film II: American Cinema," "Human Nutrition," "General Psychology: The Study of Human Behavior," "History: Western Civilization," "Social Sciences: Human Aging" and "Journalism."

Intensive nuts-and-bolts certificate programs will be offered in the areas of paralegal studies, entrepreneurship, international trade, human resources administration, health and human services, public relations/advertising and health-care administration.

MFC also will offer, via the Internet, courses on "Reading and Advanced Writing," "Microcomputer Applications," "Optimizing with Windows," "Introduction to Local Area Networks," "Introduction to the Internet" and "Microcomputer Applications II and III."
