BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Interactive technology will assist the University at Buffalo in bringing free education programs on immunization as it pertains to the health of children, women and adults to residents in the Southern Tier and the Depew area.

Students from the UB schools of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and health-profession moderators will conduct the programs, being offered by the university in partnership with Wegmans Food Markets.

The distance-learning programs will be transmitted from and presented in Wegmans stores participating in the program. UB students will be on-site for the programs at each store location, enabling them to interact and communicate with participants.

Programs will be held starting at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 22, transmitted from Wegmans at 361 Dick Road, Depew; Nov. 10, transmitted from Wegmans at 945 Fairmount Ave., Jamestown, and Dec. 8, transmitted from the Depew location.

Several 10-15 minute programs on each of the scheduled days will be followed by a question-and-answer session. Those wishing to participate will find sign-up sheets in the pharmacies in the Depew and Jamestown Wegmans.

The programs will be made possible by a $25,000 grant to UB from the Bell Atlantic Foundation. Support for the program was made to the university as recipient of the 1997 Bell Atlantic Excellence in Education Award in the Innovator Category.

The program is under the direction of Marsha Marecki, UB associate professor of nursing and clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology; Mary Ann Ludwig, Ph.D., clinical associate professor of nursing/media coordinator; Frank Schimpfhauser, Ph.D., assistant dean for educational evaluation and research in the UB medical school, and Lori Esch, Ph.D., research assistant professor in the UB pharmacy school.
