BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The jazz group Spyro Gyra will perform at 8 p.m. on Oct. 29 in Williamsville South High School, 5950 Main St.

Event sponsors are the Williamsville Music Boosters and WBFO 88.7 FM, the National Public Radio affiliate operated by the University at Buffalo.

Prior to the main event, the Williamsville East, North and South High School Jazz Ensembles will perform at 7:15 p.m.

The concert marks a return to its Western New York roots for Spyro Gyra, which went on to national acclaim and fame with its recording "Morning Dance."

Spyro Gyra got its distinctive moniker when members were forced to come up with a name to appear on a sign outside of a local club.

Member Jay Beckenstein, who then attended UB, jokingly responded with spirogyra, an algae known commonly as pond scum that he had studied in biology class.

But the name was misspelled Spyro Gyra on the club's sign.

Tickets are $15 and available at J & E Instrument Service, 8030 Roll Road, East Amherst, and Al Hemer Music Corp., 4190 North Buffalo St., Orchard Park.
