BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Stuart L. Fischman, D.M.D., professor emeritus of oral diagnostic sciences at the University at Buffalo, recently was honored by the New York State Health Department/AIDS Institute for his outstanding achievement and commitment in providing services and care for individuals with HIV and their families.
The Dr. Linda Lauberstein Clinical Excellence Award was presented to Fischman during the institute's eighth annual HIV/AIDS Statewide Policy Conference in Albany.
The award honors the late Lauberstein, a New York City internist who was among the first in the nation to care for patients with AIDS.
Fischman, the upstate recipient of the award, is coordinator of the oral health care program for the Immunodeficiency Designated Clinic at the Erie County Medical Center.
The Kenmore resident retired last year from UB and as director of the Department of Dentistry at ECMC.
A graduate of Cornell University and Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Fischman joined the UB dental faculty in 1961.
During his career at UB, he was a consultant and visiting professor at several dental schools abroad, including the National University of Asuncion, Paraguay; Hebrew University-Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem, and the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan.
He has presented continuing-education programs and lectures on such topics as the epidemiology of AIDS, forensic and hospital dentistry, and oral lesions.
Fischman is a diplomate of the American Academy of Oral Pathology and the American Board of Oral Medicine and a fellow of the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists.
