BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Robert Beauregard, professor at the Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy in the New School for Social Research, will present a lecture titled "Imagining Utopia" at 5:30 p.m. on March 31 in 105 Harriman Hall on the University at Buffalo South (Main Street) Campus.
The lecture, part of the UB School of Architecture and Planning's spring series, will be free and open to the public.
Beauregard directs the doctoral program in public and urban policy at the Milano school.
"Lurking beneath the professional veneer of planners and designers is a prescriptive imagination that, unrestrained, provides the impulse for their proposals," said Beauregard. "One cannot think about the city or propose what should happen there in its absence."
His remarks will trace this imagination across two of its most common paths: The "good city" and "living the good life."
An expert on urban planning and development, Beauregard is the author of numerous articles and books, including "Voices of Decline: The Postwar Fate of U.S. Cities," and "Readings in Urban Theory." He also is co-editor of "The Urban Moment," which is awaiting publication.
Courses he has taught include "The City Building Process," "Ethics and Public Policy," "National Urban Policy," "Planning Theory" and "Theory and Policy for Urban Redevelopment."
Beauregard holds a bachelor's degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design and a doctoral degree in city and regional planning from Cornell University.
