Millard Fillmore College to Offer Paralegal Courses

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Three specialized non-credit certificate courses for paralegals and others interested in paralegal careers will be offered this fall through Millard Fillmore College (MFC), the continuing-education and summer-sessions division of the University at Buffalo.

Registration deadline is Sept. 19 for the courses covering basic real estate, basic bankruptcy and advanced legal research and writing.

To enroll in the research and writing course, students must have completed the introductory paralegal certificate course, “Paralegal Principles and Procedures” (MFC 332), or received written permission from the instructor based on previous paralegal experience or education.

The real estate course, which will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays from Sept. 20-Oct. 19, will focus on New York real estate law, practice and customs.

Topics will include an overview of real estate practice and understanding of real estate transactions. Also covered will be preparation of deeds, mortgages, surveys and searches.

The bankruptcy course will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Sept. 23-Nov. 18.

It will cover the bankruptcy code, understanding basic bankruptcy concepts, types and litigation, preparation of bankruptcy litigation documents and petitions.

The instructor for these two courses will be Robert J. Croyle, senior attorney with the Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc. He is an examining real estate title counsel for Commonwealth Title Co.

The research and writing course will meet from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays from Sept. 20-Nov. 15.

Topics to be covered include case analysis, briefing and citation, legal research, writing, drafting memorandums of law and application of case law to fact patterns.

The instructor will be Lisa M. Yaeger, an assistant district attorney in the Buffalo City Court Bureau of the Erie County District Attorney's Office. She is a graduate of the UB law school and was a student editor for the school's Law and Policy Journal.
