Carol Burnett to Speak At UB On Oct. 9

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Actress, comedienne and six-time Emmy-award winner Carol Burnett will open the 11th annual Distinguished Speakers Series at the University at Buffalo at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, in the Mainstage theater in the Center for the Arts on the North (Amherst) Campus.

Burnett entertained television audiences for 11 years as star of “The Carol Burnett Show” and in other situation comedies, including "Mama's Family,” as well as in dramatic roles. A year ago, she returned to Broadway to star in Ken Ludwig's “Moon Over Buffalo.”

She has received more People's Choice awards than any other woman. The winner of five Golden Globes and the Peabody and Ace awards, she recently won her sixth Emmy in the category Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for her appearances on “Mad About You.”

The sponsor for Burnett's appearance is the Center for the Arts; co-sponsor is the UB Office of Conferences and Special Events.

The Distinguished Speakers Series is presented by UB and the Don Davis Auto World Lectureship Fund. Affiliate sponsor is the University Bookstore.

Other speakers scheduled for the 1997-98 series are Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense Fund, on Thursday, Nov. 20; author, columnist and CBS-TV commentator Andy Rooney on Thursday, Jan. 29, and author and poet Maya Angelou on Thursday, April 23.

The three will appear at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Mainstage.
