Ciancio to Receive Highest Award From Nys Dental Society

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sebastian G. Ciancio, D.D.S., of Amherst, professor and chair of the Department of Periodontology at the University at Buffalo, has been selected to receive the Dental Society of the State of New York's Jarvie-Burkhart Award.

The annual award recognizes outstanding service to mankind through dentistry and is the highest honor granted by the society.

Ciancio will receive the award at the society's annual banquet in November.

A Jamestown native and graduate of the UB School of Dental Medicine, Ciancio also serves as a clinical professor in the UB Department of Pharmacology.

He is recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in the fields of pharmacology and periodontology.

In addition to his career as an educator, author, researcher and lecturer, Ciancio has been active in professional organizations. He is chair of the Dentistry Expert Advisory Panel of the United States Pharmacopeia, a member of the American Dental Association Council on Scientific Affairs, consultant to the American Academy of Periodontology's Task Force on Periodontal Medical Interface and vice president of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation.

A past president of the American Academy of Periodontology, Ciancio is a member of the International and American Association for Dental Research and is on the board of directors of the International Health Care Foundation. He is editor of Biological Therapies in Dentistry and Periodontal Insights, newsletters for dental professionals.
