Winners of UB Student Poetry Contests Announced

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo has announced the winners of five student poetry contests held recently at the university.

Nick Costalas of Brooklyn, a senior majoring in English with concentrations in 20th-century American literature and creative writing, won the Academy of American Poets Poetry Prize. He also was the recipient of the Arthur Axlerod Memorial Award.

Honorable mention in the Academy of American Poets contest went to Loren Goodman of Orchard Park, a first-year graduate student in English, who has been a lifeguard in Kansas and a poetry instructor in Arizona, and Jill M. Colella of Cheektowaga, a senior majoring in English who plans to enter the English literature program at the University of Maryland.

Colella also was awarded the Scribblers Prize, the George Knight Houpt Prize and the Arthur Axlerod Memorial Award.

Alysia Roehrig of Rochester, who received two degrees at the university's recent commencement ceremony -- a bachelor's degree in psychology and a bachelor's degree in English and linguistics -- won the Friends of the University Libraries Undergraduate Poetry Prize.

Honorable mention went to Pamela A. Fiehn of East Aurora, a full-time employee in the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, who is working toward a master's degree in English.

Paul Feigenbaum of Amherst received the Arthur Axlerod Memorial Award.
