BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Beverly A. Spencer, assistant dean for community affairs in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, has received the Outstanding Service Award from the Professional Staff Senate at UB.

The award is given to a full-time professional staff member for outstanding volunteer service to the community and excellence within the individual's professional position.

A UB staff member since 1981 and affiliated with the dental school since 1994, Spencer assisted in writing the proposal that secured funding for the first Head Start Health Clinic in Western New York. She continues to support the program as a member of the Erie County Head Start Health Advisory Committee.

She has helped local schools, health centers and civic groups in the areas of heath-care education, women's and minority issues and children's health.

Spencer also has been credited with developing creative and innovative approaches to securing local and national grants for health-home improvement for lead abatement, capital and site improvements for the Geneva B. Scruggs Community Health Center and a summer infant-mortality program for pregnant teens.

A resident of Amherst, she earned bachelor's and master's degrees from UB.
