BUFFALO, N.Y -- Timothy Murphy, M.D., professor of medicine at the University at Buffalo and head of the Division of Infectious Diseases at Veterans Administration Medical Center in Buffalo, has been named investigator of the year by the American Federation of Clinical Research -- Eastern Region.
Murphy will receive a $1,500 award at the federation’s regional meeting in New York City on Oct. 7 and address the meeting’s plenary session.
The American Federation of Clinical Research is a national organization of physicians involved in research. Each of its four regions annually honors a physician under the age of 45 who has compiled an outstanding body of research.
Murphy, director of the Microbial Pathogenesis Graduate Group at UB, heads two five-year research projects devoted to studying organisms that cause middle-ear infections in children and adult lung infections. The projects are funded by $2.5 million in grants from the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
He is co-developer of a vaccine that is soon to undergo clinical trials to determine if it can provide protection against middle-ear and lung infections. This accomplishment led to his designation in 1992 as Niagara Frontier Inventor of the Year.
Murphy served as chair of the Bacteriology and Mycology Study Section of the National Institutes of Health from 1992-94 and has been a member of the section since 1989. He has published more than 60 articles in professional journals.
He is a resident of East Amherst.
