Calkin Elected Chair of Geological Society Division

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Parker E. Calkin, Ph.D., professor of geology at the University at Buffalo, has been elected 1994 chair of the Quaternary Geology and Geomorphology Division of the Geological Society of America (GSA).

The glacial geologist served as the division's first vice-chair in 1993.

A UB faculty member since 1965, Calkin has been a GSA member since receiving his doctorate from Ohio State University in 1963.

Since 1977, Calkin has made annual expeditions to Alaska, and continues to make excursions to Antarctica. He also has conducted field research in Greenland, the Yukon and Northwest Territory, and British Columbia. Locally, he has conducted research in the Lake Erie Basin on Great Lakes coastal sedimentation and erosion.

Calkin also was honored in February as one of 98 ambassadors at the seventh annual Buffalo Ambassadors' Ball for his work in attracting the GSA's Northeastern Sectional Meeting to Buffalo in 1996. He will serve as chair of the meeting, which is expected to attract 800 GSA members.

Calkin has authored or co-authored more than 150 research articles for publication or presentation at scholarly meetings. He has served as a reviewer for numerous professional publications, including Geological Society of America Bulletin, Geology, the Journal of Glaciology and the Annals of the Association of American Geographers.

Calkin resides in Amherst.
