The NIH F31 provides predoctoral individuals with supervised research training in specified health and health-related areas leading toward the research doctoral degree (e.g., PhD). NIH F31 enables promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into productive, independent research scientists, and to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research. The NIH F31 Diversity Award seeks support population groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in the biomedical, behavioral, or clinical research workforce.
