After weeks of moderate temperatures, grassy lawns and dry pavement, winter has finally arrived. And UB will celebrate the season this weekend at the annual Winterfest, being held on Saturday on the North Campus.

The free event, hosted by Student Life and Services, originally was set for Feb. 6, but was rescheduled to Feb. 20 due to the absence of snow and cold temperatures.

UB students, faculty and staff can take part in a variety of activities — including games, prizes and free food — most being held from 1-4 p.m. in the Student Union and on the Special Events Field between Clemens Hall and The Commons.

Friends can celebrate the winter weather by skating on the outdoor ice rink from 5-10 p.m. or enjoying a nice horse-drawn sleigh ride.

Participants also can put their igloo- and snowman-making skills to the test to compete for gold, silver and bronze medals. First-place winners will receive Tim Hortons gift cards.

Refreshments being served include chili in a bag, brownie bites and s’mores. Hot chocolate will be provided to help outdoor enthusiasts stay warm by the fire pit.

For those who prefer to spend time indoors, activities will include balloon-sculpting, crafts and a photo booth.

And if it should warm up and the snow melts, attendees can take part in outdoor lawn games and street hockey.
