School of Management doctoral students honored for work

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The University at Buffalo School of Management presented several awards for outstanding doctoral work at its second annual PhD Showcase and Celebration in March.

Niam Yaraghi of Isfahan, Iran, received the Dean’s Award and a prize of $2,500 as the top senior doctoral student demonstrating exceptional research performance and showing the highest potential as a scholar.  Criteria for consideration included factors such as publication in top-tier journals, presentations/papers at top conferences and research awards.

Srikanth Venkatesan of Chennai, India, received the Rising Star Award and a prize of $1,000. The Rising Star award recognizes the first- or second-year doctoral student who has most shown exceptional early overall performance in the program through engagement with faculty on research, performance in the coursework and contributing to the intellectual atmosphere of the school.

Nineteen students representing the School of Management’s six doctoral disciplines presented posters showcasing their research accomplishments.

Prizes of $1,000 were awarded to Seungwon Lee of Kiheung-gu, South Korea, and Shang-Feng (Sean) Yang of Taiwan for their poster presentations.  Judges for the poster contest were UB faculty members Chris Larsen, associate professor and director of graduate studies in geography; Nagesh S. Revankar, professor and director of graduate studies in economics; and Luis Colon, professor of chemistry.  

Renowned scholar E. Han Kim, the Everett E. Berg Professor of Business Administration at the Ross School of Business, University of Michigan, was the keynote speaker at the event. Kim received his doctorate from the UB School of Management in 1975.

Additional speakers included Arjang Assad, dean of the UB School of Management, Minakshi Trivedi, professor of marketing and chair of the school’s doctoral program, and faculty advisors for select students.  

A reception attended by students, faculty, staff and friends followed the awards presentation.
