BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will present Kevin Smith on Wednesday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for the Arts, UB North Campus. A Q&A will follow.
Smith is an American screenwriter, actor, film producer and director perhaps best known for his films featuring the "View Askewniverse" and his portrayal of "Silent Bob" throughout the series.
Smith's first film in the View Askew series, the highly influential Clerks, was shot for a mere $27,525 in the convenience store where Smith worked. Despite an extremely limited release, Clerks won prizes at both the Sundance Film Festival and the Cannes International Film Festival and would eventually gross $3.1 million. Smith would go on to write several more critically and commercially successful films in the View Askew series, including Mallrats, Chasing Amy, Dogma, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks II.
Smith has also written or directed several successful non-View Askew films such as the buddy-cop comedy Cop Out (which is Smith's highest grossing film to date), the romantic comedy Zach and Miri Make a Porno and the independently produced horror film, Red State.
In addition to his successful film career, Smith has been a lifelong fan of comic books. Smith has written a number of comic series, including releases about the View Askewniverse, as well as Batman, Spiderman, Daredevil and more. He is also the owner of Jay and Silent Bob's Secret Stash, a comic book store in New Jersey. He appears in and produces the reality television show Comic Book Men on AMC, which is set inside the Secret Stash.
His presentation will include a question-and-answer session, features have become quite popular and have even been released on DVD.
