BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will present Aszure Barton & Artists on Wednesday, Oct. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for the Arts, UB North Campus. The performance is sponsored by M&T Bank.

Aszure Barton & Artists is a collective of visual, sound and performing artists, working to evoke the movement-based vision and free spirit of its founder. Aszure Barton, a protege of the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov (and the first choreographer for his Baryshnikov Arts Center), has earned the distinguished reputation of producing striking choreography for stage and film. Founded in 2002, Aszure Barton & Artists has already made exciting contributions to international contemporary dance and film.

Barton was born and raised in Canada and started tap dancing at the age of three. She received her formal training at the National Ballet School in Toronto and has collaborated with and created works for Mikhail Baryshnikov, Hell's Kitchen Dance, The National Ballet of Canada, and The Juilliard School, among many others. She is currently an artist in residence at The Banff Centre in Canada and The Baryshnikov Arts Center in New York City, and was proclaimed the official Ambassador of Contemporary Choreography in Alberta, Canada.

About Aszure Barton & Artists, NY Magazine has said, "At 35, Barton is one of the most promising and consistently commissioned young choreographers in modern dance and ballet. She has the sort of infectious enthusiasm you might find in a favorite camp counselor, and her work is just as inviting: Not abstruse or overly clever, it fuses elegant fluidity with simple everyday gestures." Globe & Mail has said, "The brilliant New York-based Barton produces delectable works that are quirky, deep, cheeky and poignant. Her quicksilver, unpredictable movement always astonishes the eye."
