BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will present the Band of the Irish Guards, featuring the pipes, drums and highland dancers of the Royal Regiment of Scotland (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) on Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the UB North Campus. The performance will feature the music of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales.
Since its formation in 1900, The Band of the Irish Guards has toured extensively worldwide, and 2010 will mark its debut tour of the United States. The 49-member band's main duty is to play, in turn with the other four foot guards bands, for the mounting of the Queen's Guard at Buckingham Palace and for state ceremonial occasions and other public duties.
The Royal Regiment of Scotland (The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders) was formed in 1881. The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders last appeared on a North American tour in 1993. Since 2002 the Battalion has served in Iraq, Bosnia, Belize, Kenya and, most recently, Afghanistan, where the Pipes and Drums were deployed as part of the heavy machine gun (HMG) platoon, working closely with the U.S. Marine Corps.
