Five hundred middle-school girls from all over Western New York will participate in Tech-Savvy, a day-long series of entertaining, hands-on workshops to show girls how much fun they can have while studying science and technology.

The event will be held tomorrow (Saturday, March 7, 2009) in the basement, first and second floors of Clemens Hall on the UB North (Amherst) Campus. Great visuals! Great feature story!

Topics and activities range from making (and then eating) gum drops to learn about chemical engineering, simulating cities, donning white coats to learn about dentistry, figuring out how to make concrete float. In addition, participants will hear an inspirational address by Major Melissa Eslinger of the U.S. Army, now a faculty member at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, from 2-3:15 p.m. in Slee Hall, also on the UB North Campus.

Good workshops for media: Candyland in 220 Clemens and Dentist for a Day in 221 Clemens.

Best time for media to view workshops: 10:30, 11:30 or 1:30 (all workshops are repeated throughout the day)

The event is sponsored by the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, the American Association of University Women Buffalo Branch, Inc., and the Praxair Foundation.

Press arrangements: Ellen Goldbaum in the UB Office of University Communications at 645 5000 ext. 1415 or Kerry Collins-Gross, assistant dean for undergraduate education in UB Engineering, on-site at 622-2096.
