BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Stuart Fischman, D.M.D., professor emeritus of oral diagnostic sciences in the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, will receive the 2008 Pharmacology/Therapeutics/ Toxicology Research Award from the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) at its 86th General Session and Exhibition to be held July 2-5 in Toronto.
The award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the IADR.
Fischman is being recognized for "outstanding and sustained peer-reviewed research that has contributed to our knowledge of the mechanisms, efficacy or safety of drugs used in dentistry."
Fischman has made significant contributions to the evaluation of drugs to prevent or treat dental caries and periodontal disease. He has designed and managed many clinical trials and has published more than 100 articles in research journals.
Although retired, he continues to conduct research, including the clinical evaluation of dentifrices and mouth rinses, the management of ulcerative diseases of the oral mucosa and the oral manifestations of HIV disease. He serves as a consultant to several manufacturers of oral health products and to the New York State AIDS Institute.
Retired director of dentistry at the Erie County Medical Center, Fischman continues to coordinate the oral health care program for the AIDS Designated Center at the medical center. He received the Clinical Excellence Award from the New York State AIDS Institute in 1998.
Named a distinguished alumnus by the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Fischman is a diplomat of the American Boards of Oral Pathology and Oral Medicine and previously was a Lady Davis Fellow and a Forcheimer Fellow at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Fischman maintains homes in the Town of Tonawanda and in Jerusalem.
