UB Faculty Member Receives Engineering Award

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- John L. Crassidis of Clarence Center, associate professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the University at Buffalo School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, has been selected to receive SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) International's Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award.

Crassidis is one of four aerospace engineers chosen to receive the award at the SAE 2007 AeroTech Congress & Exhibition.

The honor recognizes outstanding engineering educators and offers them the chance to meet and exchange views with practicing engineers in their field. Crassidis received his bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in mechanical and aerospace engineering from UB. He joined the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in January 2001 and serves as director of UB's Advanced Navigation & Control Systems Laboratory.

He received a UB Young Investigator Award in 2002.

The author of more than 90 journal and conference papers, Crassidis is the principal author of the textbook "Optimal Estimation of Dynamic Systems," as well as recipient of best paper awards at the 2001 and 2003 Guidance Navigation and Control conferences. He is a reviewer for numerous academic journals.

His other honors include recognition from such national organizations as the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, National Transportation Research Board and United States Achievement Academy.

Crassidis has been as a NASA Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Goddard Space Flight Center and held previous academic appointments at Texas A&M University and the Catholic University of America.
