UB Center for the Arts to Hold "Explore the Arts" Theatrical Arts Summer Program for Grades 5-9

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Center for the Arts at the University at Buffalo will present Explore the Arts, its first theatrical arts summer program for children, from July 12-16 at the Center for the Arts. Registration and fee are required.

Explore the Arts is a theatrical arts summer program for children in grades 5-9 taught by a combination of University at Buffalo professional staff, faculty, graduate students and area professionals. The one-week session during the summer will include instruction on both performance and technical theater, culminating in a final exhibition and demonstration of skills. Instruction will be at an introductory level in the first year.

The program is designed to introduce, expose and expand participants' knowledge and interest in the arts, enhance their creativity and personal expression and provide a foundation for growth and development.

The following workshops, which may be subject to change, are planned:

-- Introduction to technical theater

-- Theatrical lighting: basic lighting principles and design; and use of lighting instruments

-- Theatrical sound: basic sound principles and design; and use of live sound equipment

-- Prop and scenery construction and introduction to performance

-- Acting (improv, comedy, drama) and movement (stage combat, dance and mime)

- Costume and mask making: Students will design and make their own costumes and masks, which will be utilized in the various performing workshops.

Sessions will end with an exhibit of student work or demonstration to which families will be invited. Each student will receive a certificate of completion.

Cost of the program is $250, and lunch and snacks will be included.
