BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Eight University at Buffalo students recently were recognized as among the most outstanding students in the State University of New York system when they received the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence.

They are: Geoffrey Andrews of West Seneca, Rebecca Ashare of Farmingville, Sara Center of East Amherst, Pamela Cocol of Depew, Jennifer Drake of Niagara Falls, Hedva Krauze of Staten Island, Crystal Oliver of Chester and Danielle Sheather of Unionville, Ontario, Canada.

The UB students were among 283 students from 61 SUNY campuses honored at a ceremony in Albany on April 21 where SUNY Chancellor Robert L. King presented certificates and medallions to be worn at commencement to the honorees in attendance.

Students, who were selected based on grade point average and significant contributions to their campus communities, were recommended by campus selection committees, with the SUNY Office of University Life recommending finalists to King.

"These students are among the State University's best and brightest," said King. "Their commitment not only to academic excellence, but also to serving the wider community indicates they are likely to emerge as New York's future leaders. I am enormously proud of these students and very pleased to be able to recognize their accomplishments."

A premier research-intensive public university, the University at Buffalo is largest and most comprehensive campus in the State University of New York system. UB's more than 26,000 undergraduate, graduate and professional students pursue their academic interests through more than 100 undergraduate programs, 112 master's programs and 98 doctoral-level programs. It offers the only degrees in law, pharmacy and architecture in the SUNY system, and is the home of the only comprehensive public school of engineering in New York State. UB's athletic teams compete at the NCAA Division I level.
