BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo Graduate School of Education conferred awards upon one of its outstanding doctoral students and several alumni at the school's recent commencement ceremony.
The Delbert Mullens "Thinking Outside the Box" Award was presented to Marisol Hanley of Buffalo, who received a doctorate in counseling psychology from the Department of Counseling, School and Educational Psychology.
The Mullens award is given to a graduate who is committed to making a corner of the world better and who has shown creativity in his or her studies and exceptional flexibility in balancing the demands of school, family and the community.
The school also presented its Dean's Service Award to Vincent Coppola of Watertown, executive director of the Western New York Educational Service Council. Coppola received a doctorate in counselor education from UB in 1970.
In addition, three alumni received the school's Distinguished Alumni Award. They are:
o Elizabeth J. Cappella of Buffalo, chair of the Department of Educational Foundations at Buffalo State College. Cappella received a doctorate in educational psychology from UB in 1981.
o William Crocoll of North Ferrisburg, Vt., former superintendent of the East Aurora Union Free School District, the Second Supervisory District of Erie County and the Williston, Vt., Central School District. Crocoll holds a doctorate in educational administration from UB.
o Mary Ann Wheeler Franklin of New Orleans, former assistant dean and assistant vice president for academic affairs at Morgan State University and former assistant to the dean at Southern University in New Orleans. Franklin received a master's degree in science education from UB in 1948.
