Thompson Named to Board of World Maritime University

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Myron A. (Mick) Thompson, associate provost and executive director of the graduate school at the University at Buffalo, has been appointed to the Board of Governors of the World Maritime University.

Located in Malmö, Sweden, the World Maritime University operates under the auspices of the International Maritime Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations. Serving students from more than 140 countries and territories, the WMU is a member of the Association of European Universities, the International Association of Universities and the Council of Graduate Schools (USA).

Thompson has served as associate provost and executive director of the UB Graduate School since 1995, maintaining supervision of all administrative functions and operations of the Graduate School.

Prior to his current post, he served as interim vice provost for graduate education; as the chief budget, personnel and operations officer for the UB provost, and as associate dean of the former Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Thompson has authored articles appearing in various refereed publications and has been an invited speaker at national conferences and organizational meetings.

In addition, he has served as a consultant to more than 40 colleges and universities in both the public and private sectors across the United States and in Europe, and has authored numerous grant proposals that have resulted, collectively, in the award of more than $15 million from federal and other sources.

Thompson received a doctoral degree from UB in 1973.

He resides in East Amherst.
