"Berlin to Broadway" to Feature Music of Composer Kurt Weill

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The UB Department of Theatre and Dance will present "Berlin to Broadway," Feb. 20-24 in the Black Box Theatre in the Center for the Arts on the North (Amherst) Campus. Performance times will be 8 p.m. Feb. 20-22; 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Feb. 23, and 2 p.m. Feb. 24.

Presenting songs from "The Threepenny Opera," "Happy End," "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny," "Marie Galante," "Johnny Johnson," "Lady in the Dark," "Knickerbocker Holiday," "One Touch Of Venus," "Love Life," "Street Scene" and "Lost in the Stars," "Berlin to Broadway" is the remarkable musical voyage of composer Kurt Weill.

This splendid revue of 40 Weill songs is presented in a fluid, amazingly simple format that spans the history of 20 extraordinary years -- from Von Hindenburg and Hitler in Germany, where Weill became an outstanding theater composer by the time he was 30, to Roosevelt and Truman in the U.S., where he became a renowned citizen and a master of the Broadway musical.

Music is written by Kurt Weill, with lyrics by Maxwell Andersen, Marc Blitzstein, Bertolt Brecht, Jacques Deval, Michael Feingold, Ira Gershwin, Paul Green, Langston Hughes, Alan Jay Lerner, Ogden Nash, George Tabori and Arnold Weinstein.

"Berlin to Broadway" will be directed and choreographed by Lynne Kurdziel-Formato, with musical direction by Michael Hake. The cast will feature students from the UB Department of Theatre and Dance.
