The University at Buffalo quickly responded on Tuesday to the needs of students from the New York City metropolitan and Washington, D.C., areas following the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. Student Affairs established a "NYC/DC Response Center" staffed with counselors and equipped with a telephone bank for students to use to call relatives in those areas.

On Thursday, UB President William R. Greiner in a message to the campus community asked students, faculty and staff to continue to value and protect UB's multi-ethnic and multi-religious community in their personal responses to this week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon.

And on Tuesday, President Greiner issued a statement in response to the attack on our nation.

-- The temporary "NYC/DC Response Center for UB" will remain open throughout the week (Wednesday, Thursday, Friday) from 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. to maintain assistance to students and University community members.

The Center has been established in Room 210 Student Union.

The Center will continue to provide counseling (UB Counseling Center, Campus Ministries, Social Work volunteers), telephone communication links to New York and Washington, and updated information on the ongoing tragedy and responses. Faculty and staff dealing with impacted students are encouraged to contact the Center or have the student contact the Center directly.

To contact the Center or to get more response information, call 645-INFO or 645-6125.

-- Television monitors in the Student Union and Harriman Hall will broadcast network news coverage on the attacks and response throughout the day for the rest of the week.

-- Parents of UB students can access information on campus conditions and responses by calling the Center (716-645-INFO) or the Parent Hotline at 1-877-434-0665 (toll free). UB students with family or friends in NYC/DC have been encouraged to make direct contact with them as soon as they can.

-- The UB Counseling Center and UB Health Service will remain open throughout the week to provide needed campus support. Contact Counseling at 645-2720 and the Health Center at 829-3316.

-- Many non-academic campus events, scheduled for the rest of the week and the weekend, may be postponed or rescheduled. Please contact the program sponsors directly for more information on activities.
