BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Faculty and staff members of the Department of Mathematics in the College of Arts and Sciences officially will be welcomed to the North Campus today at the opening dedication of the new Mathematics Building.

The ceremony, scheduled for 4 p.m. in the building on the west end of the academic spine adjacent to the Natural Sciences Complex, will feature remarks by President William R. Greiner, Provost Elizabeth D. Capaldi, Dean Kerry Grant and department Chair Samuel D. Schack.

Completion of the $7.3 million building this past summer brought the department back to the center of the College of Arts and Sciences, as well as facilitated its contact with students and colleagues in the schools of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Management, department administrators say.

Department offices had been located in Diefendorf Hall on the South Campus.

The building features an undergraduate tutoring lab and a colloquium room equipped with such technological enhancements as computers, ethernet connections, video equipment, a visualizer, and a high-resolution projector.

It also includes four seminar rooms, two computer rooms and space for more than 60 faculty and graduate student offices, each outfitted with the infrastructure-both high-tech (computers) and low-tech (blackboards)-required for modern research and instruction in mathematics.
