UB recognizes Architecture and Planning Students

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Students in the School of Architecture and Planning recently received awards for excellence in their fields of study.

The award-winners in the Department of Architecture were:

• Emmett Tenpas of Sherman (baccalaureate) and Michael Wnuk of Leicester (graduate), the Dean's Award given to the returning students with the highest grade-point averages

• Scott Adams of West Seneca (senior), Emmett Tenpas of Sherman (junior), Catherine Ferraris of Farmingdale (sophomore) and Sze Man Queenie Tong of Hong Kong (freshman), Academic Achievement Awards, given to the student in each class with the highest overall grade-point average

• Jennifer Hendricks-Hoffman of Buffalo, the Academic Achievement Award, given to the student in the first year of the three-year graduate program with the highest overall grade-point average

• Michael Maggio of Utica and Korydon Smith of Cassadaga (seniors), Theodore Lutz of Dunkirk and Austin Seid of Brooklyn (juniors), Tamara Chenez of Lockport and Vivian Uang of Scarsdale (sophomores) and Rachel Martin of Lockport (freshman), Design Excellence Award to students with outstanding studio work

• Su-Hyun Yi of Korea, Design Excellence Award, given to a student in the first year of the three-year graduate program who has demonstrated outstanding studio work

• Kerron Miller of Brooklyn, Service and Leadership Award

• William Joseph Greeley of Buffalo, the Alpha Rho Chi Medal for leadership, scholarship and service, and the Matthew W. DelGaudio Award for the design of an imaginative solution to an architectural problem that is both structurally sound and functionally ideal

• Afwina Dwi Ekawati of Amherst, the Chair's Award

• John Charles Warobick of Williamsville, the Henry Adams Gold Medal for the architecture student with the highest grade-point average

• Arati Krishna Kirtikar of India, the Henry Adams Certificate for the architecture student with the second-highest grade-point average

• Scott Baum of Penn Yan, the Architectural Research Center's Consortium King Student Medal

• Barrie Brennan Jansen of Youngstown (first place), Fung Or of Hong Kong and Karen Peterson of Buffalo (second-place tie), Michael Maggio of Utica (third place) and Korydon Smith of Cassadaga (fourth place), the Pella/WESTNY Scholarship for superior use of fenestration in architecture

• Oscar Traynor of St. Catharines, the American Institute of Architects/American Architectural Foundation Scholarship

The following students received "Who's Who" certificates based on a combination of scholarship, activity, participation and service to the university:

The Department of Planning recognized students in the following degree programs:

• Bachelor's in Environmental Design: Matthew Michael Shipkey of Marilla, Dean's Award for the continuing student with the highest grade-point average; Bester Tauro of Niagara Falls, the R. Buckminister Fuller Award, given to a student returning for graduate study, and Mark Richard Holdren of Derby, Academic Excellence Award

• Master's of Urban Planning: Lisa M. Kuligowski of North Tonawanda, Dean's Award for the continuing student with the highest grade-point average; Timothy Patrick Buckley of Buffalo, Academic Excellence and Best Thesis awards; Ramon C. Garcia of Buffalo, Academic Excellence Award; Matthew Scott Balling of Buffalo, Service Award, and Carren M. Simpson of Port Charlotte, Fla., American Institute of Certified Planners Planning Excellence Award.
