BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The Department of Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) in the School of Health Related Professions has been rated among the top 15 such departments in the nation in faculty-research productivity by the journal Clinical Laboratory Science.

The study, conducted at The Ohio State University in collaboration with the University of Tennessee at Memphis and the University of Minnesota, involved 127 college and university CLS programs. The UB department was the only one in New York State and one of only three departments in the Northeast ranked among the top 15 by the journal.

Faculty research productivity was defined as time spent in research, numbers of publications and presentations, and grant activity, including grants submitted but not funded.

In addition to UB, the top 15 programs, listed in the journal in alphabetical order, are at Georgia State University, Medical College of Georgia, Michigan State University, The Ohio State University, University of Kentucky, University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, University of Minnesota and University of North Carolina.

Also, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Texas at Galveston, University of Texas at San Antonio, University of Vermont, University of Wisconsin at Madison and University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee.

The Department of Clinical Laboratory Sciences provides instruction leading to a bachelor's and master's degree in medical technology, a field of applied biology and chemistry appropriate for students primarily interested in the delivery of health services.

The department, chaired by Paul Kostyniak, Ph.D., also offers a special major in biotechnology.
