BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Lively demonstrations, lectures and exhibits ranging from a visit to a turn-of-the-century apothecary/pharmacy to improved techniques for forecasting the weather will be among the more than 30 workshops and mini-lectures to be presented as part of the 15th annual Science Exploration Day, to be held on May 19 at the University at Buffalo.

An estimated 1,100 high-school students from Erie and Niagara counties are expected to "turn on to science" at Science Exploration Day, scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the UB North (Amherst) Campus.

A highlight will be a program presented by L. Dennis Christopher, NASA aerospace education specialist at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md.

A consultant to the Public Broadcasting System program "NOVA," Christopher will lecture at 9:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. in 112 Norton Hall (Woldman Theatre).

He has presented more than 2,500 lectures, demonstrations and workshops to some 150,000 students and more than 3,200 teachers across the nation.

During the day, students can choose from among 35 mini-lectures set for 9:15 a.m., 10:15 a.m. and 12:45 p.m. Seven large-group lecture/demonstrations will be held at 11:15 a.m. and 11:45 a.m.

Science Exploration Day is sponsored by the Niagara Frontier Science Supervisors Association and the western section of the Science Teachers Association of New York State.

Additional sponsors are the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, the Office of Admissions, the Graduate School of Education, Educational Technology Services and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, all at UB; the New York Sea Grant/Great Lakes Program; Wilson Greatbatch Ltd., and West Valley Nuclear Services Co./Westinghouse.
