BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The University at Buffalo School of Management has hired an international management-consulting firm to assist in its search for a new dean.

Korn/Ferry International, a worldwide leader in executive recruitment, has been selected by the UB School of Management's search committee to help screen applicants and attract a pool of highly qualified candidates to the dean's position.

"The hiring of Korn/Ferry reflects the seriousness of the university's desire to attract candidates of the highest caliber for this very visible position," said Mark Karwan, dean of The UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and chair of the search committee. "Korn/Ferry has an outstanding record of helping business schools nationwide hire leaders who possess excellent qualifications."

The management school already has begun receiving applications and nominations for the position as the result of advertisements placed in national publications, Karwan noted. The search committee will use Korn/Ferry to screen those applicants and solicit interest from appropriate candidates from both academia and the corporate world.

According to advertisements posted by the management school, it "seeks an ambitious, proactive chief executive who can lead the school in its mission to be among the premier public business schools in the Northeast."

"The ideal candidate would help strengthen the school's ties to the business community and will help shape the school's curricula so that it remains competitive with the best business schools in the country," Karwan said.

The search committee will begin review of all applications on Jan. 5 and expects to make a recommendation for the position by spring.

The school's deanship opened in July after former dean Frederick Winter left for the dean's job at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and the College of Business Administration at the University of Pittsburgh.

Members of the search committee are Karwan; Brian Becker, professor, Department of Organization and Human Resources; Angela Bontempo, senior vice president and executive director, Roswell Park Cancer Institute; Thomas Disare, clinical associate professor, UB School of Law; David Fallace, MBA student; Susan Hamlen, associate professor, Department of Accounting and Law; Duane Hopper, president and CEO, Graphic Controls Corporation; Brian Ratchford, professor, Department of Marketing; Michael Rozeff, professor, Department of Finance and Managerial Economics, and Cynthia Shore, assistant dean and director of the management school's Career Resource Center.
