60 Students Honored At UB Medical School Commencement

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sixty graduates of the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences received awards at the school's recent commencement ceremony.

• Michael Kane of Elmira, the American Academy of Family Physicians President's Award for excellence in family practice, the Baccelli Award for most outstanding research and the Robin M. Bannerman Memorial Research Award for most meritorious research in biomedical science initiated in the Summer Fellowship Program

• Maryann Dean of Mexico City, Mexico, the Association of Pathology Chair's Award for excellence in pathology, the Gilbert M. Beck Memorial Prize for academic excellence in psychiatry, a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha, the national medical honor society

• Jeanine Cooley of West Seneca, the Buffalo Pediatric Society Award for outstanding pediatric skills, a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award for achievement in clinical sciences, the Morris & Sadie Stein Neuroanatomy Award for excellence in neuroanatomy, the John Watson Award in Medicine for enthusiasm and commitment to scholarship in medicine, a Janet Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Luna Bailey of Bronx, the Dean's Award sponsored by the Medical Alumni Association for participation in extracurricular activities in the medical school while maintaining a high standard of academic excellence, the National Medical Association Award for demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership and commitment of community service, a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• David Montesanti of Brooksville, Fla., the Harry E. and Loretta A. Jordan Award for proficiency in ophthalmology and the Francis J. Klocke Award for excellence in clinical investigation

• Lawrence Kanner of Merrick, the Bernard H. Smith Memorial Award in Clinical Neurology for academic excellence in clinical neurology and the Children's Hospital Prize for excellence in understanding disease in childhood

• Gordon Wingard of Salamanca, the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine Award for excellence in emergency medicine, the Dr. Austin Flint Award for achievement in basic sciences and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Scott Helsley of Erie, Pa., the Robert J. McIsaac Award for pharmacology and toxicology, and the S. Robert Narins Memorial Award for academic excellence in dermatology

• Sunil Srivastava of Jamaica, N.Y., the Maimonides Medical Society Award for the most outstanding performance in the basic science years, the E.J. Weisenheimer Award for excellence in scholarship and patient care in ophthalmology and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Jose Maceda of Williamsville, the Clyde L. Randall Society Award in Gynecology-Obstetrics for academic excellence and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Hannah Toon of Amherst, the Liberman Award for interest and aptitude in the study of anesthesiology, a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Nicole Pazzaglini of Orwigsburg, Pa., a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Bonnie Cheng of Sunnyside, a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Kathleen Pastore of Balston Spa, the Dr. Heinrich Leonhardt Prize in Surgery, a Janet M. Glascow Citation for academic excellence for women and an induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Carl Seon of Williamsville, a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award for achievement in clinical sciences and an induction into Alpha Omega Alpha

• Daniel Yawman of Fairport, a Dr. Cyrenius Chapin Award for achievement in clinical sciences and the Association of Pathology Chairs Award for excellence in pathology

• Paula Kocialski of Depew, the S. Mouchly Small, M.D., Award for the ability to relate well to patients, faculty and staff

• Leslie Barr of Lewiston, the Bernhardt & Sophie B. Gottlieb Award for expertise in areas outside of medicine

• Garin Tomaszewski of North Tonawanda, the Dr. George Alker Award for excellence in radiology

• Dejian Ren of Boston, Mass., the Dean's Award for Outstanding Dissertation Research

• Charles Fetterman of North Tonawanda, the Dr. Thomas J. Guttuso Award for academic excellence in ophthalmology

• David Serra of Depew, the Hans J. Lowenstein Award for academic excellence in obstetrics

• Christopher Schaeffer of Buffalo, the James Platt White Society Award for leadership qualities of foresight, intellectual vigor and moral courage that personify those of Dr. White

• Emily Aguilar of Webster, the Frederick B. Wilkes Pediatric Award for the graduating student entering a career in pediatrics who has best exemplified Dr. Wilkes' skills and dedication to patients

• April Cyr of Carlisle, Mass, the Gordon S. Ehrlich Award for the demonstration of significant understanding of childhood disease

• Michelle Mang of Fort Collins, Colo., the Charles Bauda Award for academic excellence in family medicine

• Mark Hayman of Tonawanda, the Microbiology Travel Award in memory of Eugene A. Gorzynski

• Lisa Heichberger of Springville, the G. Norris Miner Memorial award for demonstration of outstanding clinical competence in family medicine

• Xin Guo of Baltimore, Md., the Robert J. McIsaac Award for pharmacology and toxicology

• Therese Caligiuri of Kenmore, the David K. Miller Prize in Medicine for demonstration of Dr. Miller's approach to caring for the sick, which embodied competence, humility, humanity.

• Judith Kim of Pittsford, the S. Robert Narins Memorial Award for academic excellence in dermatology

• Kristen Nesbitt of West Oneonta, the Dr. Benjamin E. and Lila Obletz Award for outstanding performance in orthopaedic surgery

• Jennifer Lee of Garden City, the Stephen J. Paolini Award which recognizes the student who best exemplifies the qualities of dedication and compassion of Dr. Paolini.

• Yvonne Bobek of Williamsville, the John Paroski, M.D., Memorial Award for compassion and excellence in patient care

• Michael Markham of Brockport, the Mark A. Petrino Award for demonstrated interest and aptitude for the general practice of medicine.

• Michael Cummings of South Glens Falls, the Farney R. Wurlitzer Award for academic excellence in psychiatry

• Kevin Militello of Cheektowaga, the Ernest Witebsky Award for the graduate student with the highest grade-point average in the microbiology core curriculum.
