UB Faculty Member Teaches, Does Research At Finnish University

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Marjorie A. White, professor of nursing and director of the Center for Nursing Research at the University at Buffalo, spent part of the spring 1997 semester as a visiting professor in the Department of Nursing Science at the University of Tampere, Tampere, Finland.

While at the University of Tampere, White taught a graduate course on family theory and conducted research as part of the European Action Scheme for the Mobility of University Students (ERASMUS), an educational exchange program involving European universities.

White also continued research on families and child abuse in Finland with colleagues at the university. The study, of which she is the principal investigator, began in 1994-95 when White spent time at the university on a Fulbright Senior Scholars Fellowship.

A UB faculty member since 1995, White previously held tenured faculty positions at the University of Florida and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

During a distinguished career that began in 1948 as a staff nurse at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, she has won dozens of awards; published numerous articles, book chapters and abstracts, and conducted extensive research, both at home and abroad.

She has served as a consultant to various universities and hospitals, been awarded membership in numerous professional organizations and made more than 100 presentations at academic conferences.

White received her nursing diploma from Michael Reese Hospital, a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota, a master's degree in nursing from the University of Rochester and master's and doctoral degrees from Case Western Reserve University.

She resides in East Amherst
