Pataki Appoints Castellani to Serve As Chair of UB Council

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Lawrence P. Castellani, president and chief executive officer of Tops Markets, Inc., has been appointed chair of the University at Buffalo Council by Gov. George E. Pataki.

Castellani, who was appointed to the council in January 1996, succeeds Philip B. Wels, who has resigned from the council.

From 1993-96, Castellani served as chair of the Board of Trustees of the University at Buffalo Foundation, Inc., with which he has been affiliated since 1986.

Castellani joined Tops Friendly Markets as a stock clerk in 1962. After holding several managerial positions throughout the company, he was appointed director of operations in 1975. In 1991, he was named president and CEO of Tops Markets Inc.

He was named Niagara Frontier Executive of the Year by the UB School of Management in November 1995.

Castellani's term as a member of the UB Council runs through June 30, 2002.

The UB Council is the local governing council of the University at Buffalo.
