Yang Named Fellow of American Institute of Chemical Engineers

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Ralph T. Yang, Ph.D., Praxair professor and chair of the University at Buffalo Department of Chemical Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

Recognizing outstanding contributions to both the profession and the institute, fellow status in the American Institute of Chemical Engineers is one of the highest honors that can be conferred upon a chemical engineer. To qualify, one must be a practicing engineer for more than 25 years, a member of the institute for 10 years and be sponsored by five peers.

A UB faculty member since 1978, Yang has published more than 190 papers in scientific journals and holds 10 U.S. patents in the areas of gas separation, kinetics and catalysis.

The third printing of his book, "Gas Separation by Adsorption Processes," published by Butterworth, has been translated into Russian and Chinese. He also co-edited "New Directions of Sorption Technology."

Before coming to UB, he worked at Brookhaven and Argonne National laboratories and the Aluminum Company of America.

Yang has served on the advisory boards of the American Carbon Society; Adsorption Science and Technology, an international journal, and Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, a journal published by the American Chemical Society. He has chaired the American Institute of Chemical Engineers' Committee on Adsorption and Ion Exchange. In 1987, he served as a program director of the National Science Foundation.

Yang received a bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University and master's and doctoral degrees from Yale University.

He lives in Williamsville.
